Li Wanjun has participated in the trial-production welding of the first parts of dozens of bogies for urban rail cars and multiple units in China, summarized and formulated more than 30 kinds of bogies welding specifications and operation methods, and tackled more than 150 technical problems, of which 27 won national patents. More than 30 bogie welding operation methods, such as his "gun-dragging right welding method", have saved money and created more than 80 million yuan for enterprises.

Li Wanjun, male, born in 1968, Han nationality, party member of the Communist Party of China, senior worker technician, and chief operator of CRRC Changke Co., Ltd., joined the work in the former Changchun Bus Factory in August 1987. He always stuck to the welding post of railway passenger car bogies, worked hard and overcame difficulties, and quickly became a technical expert in the welding field of the company. He won the first place in the appearance of welding samples in the 2005 National Welder Skills Competition, and successively in 1997.
With the successful operation of "Fuxing", a 350km/h China high-speed railway, China high-speed railway has become a beautiful scenery in the world. In less than 10 years, China has gone through 40 years of development of high-speed railways in the world. Chinese CRRC skilled workers who showed their talents in the production of high-speed EMUs with world-class technology were praised by Premier Li Keqiang as "the first generation of high-speed rail workers in China". In this glorious team, the national model workers — — Li Wanjun, with his superb welding technology and professionalism, has made important contributions to the development of China’s high-speed rail industry and is known as the "master of high-speed rail welding".
First, explore and innovate, and show your talents again and again
Bogie manufacturing technology is one of the nine core technologies of high-speed EMU. One of the main reasons why China’s high-speed EMUs can run at such a high speed is that our bogie technology has made a major breakthrough. Li Wanjun worked in the welding position of the bogie. He has participated in the first trial-production welding of dozens of bogies of urban rail cars and multiple units in China, summarized and formulated more than 30 kinds of bogies welding specifications and operation methods, and tackled more than 150 technical problems, of which 27 won national patents.
As the main model of the sixth national railway speed increase, the EMU with a speed of 250 kilometers per hour was trial-produced in Changke Co., Ltd. Because the bogie ring has to bear the weight of the car body weighing 50 tons, it has become the key part of the high-speed EMU manufacturing, and its welding quality requirements are extremely high. At the initial stage of trial production, due to the large number of welding sections, serious quality problems such as non-fusion of welded joints are prone to occur, which has temporarily become a bottleneck restricting bogie production. At the critical moment, Li Wanjun finally found out the "seven-step operation method of girth welding" with great strength, which was well formed and high in quality, and successfully broke through the key of mass production. This "unique skill", which surprised foreign experts, has been incorporated into the production process.
CRRC introduced the technology of high-speed EMU with a speed of 350km/h from Siemens, Germany. Because the foreign side has not had such a high-speed operation precedent before, bogie manufacturing has become a joint research topic for both sides. With the great trust of leaders, Li Wanjun participated in the expert group of bogie welding procedure qualification, and played a special role of highly skilled personnel. Taking the relevant data obtained from trial production in Li Wanjun as an important reference, the Welding Specification for Ultra-high-speed Bogies compiled by enterprises has solved the big problems in guiding mass production.
At the beginning of 2015, the company trial-produced the first standardized EMU (Fuxing EMU) in China. Many joints of bogies were never contacted by employees. Among them, the irregular welds of the torsion bar seat of the bogie side beam and the slope welds of the connecting interface of the transverse beam have extremely high quality requirements, and the radiographic inspection must be zero defects, and no defects are allowed. Because there are too many joints of irregular welds, it is easy to cause welding defects, which becomes a bottleneck problem that restricts the smooth production. Li Wanjun-based research team, after repeated argumentation and experiments, finally summed up an efficient and scientific welding method. They crossed the operation techniques of flat welding, vertical welding and downhill welding to successfully overcome this welding problem, and summarized the operation method to guide employees to complete this welding work.
At the beginning of 2016, Li Wanjun led the studio members to successfully complete 31 process evaluations of thick plate welding of new york metro bogies in the United States, providing reliable welding specifications and operating basis for trial production of 40mm thick plate bogies in China. At the beginning of 2017, on this basis, Li Wanjun personally participated in the trial production of four American new york bogies, and passed the certification of American welding experts. On June 27, 2018, Changke Co., Ltd. became the first production unit in China to successfully obtain the production qualification of American new york subway bogies.
With superb welding technology, Li Wanjun has overcome one technical difficulty after another by participating in the production of dozens of high-speed cars, railway passenger cars, urban rail cars and trains exported to Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Brazil, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia and other countries.
Second, study hard and practice hard to create innovative skills.
Li Wanjun’s achievements in his post are not accidental. In the long-term work of 31 years, he is diligent in research and innovation, and has developed excellent welding skills. He also holds six international welder (technician) qualification certificates for carbon steel and stainless steel welding. Argon arc welding, carbon dioxide gas shielded welding, MAG welding, TIG welding and other welding methods, flat, vertical, horizontal, upward and pipe welding shapes and positions, he is proficient in everything.
Li Wanjun invented the "new electrode holder" according to the welding characteristics of dissimilar metal materials, which has obtained the national patent and been popularized. In 2012, Li Wanjun summarized more than 30 bogie welding operation methods, such as "gun-dragging right welding method", according to the special requirements of Australian stainless steel double-deck railway passenger car bogie welding, which were widely used in production, saving funds and creating more than 80 million yuan for enterprises.
Li Wanjun used argon arc welding method for the first time in welding the girth of single-layer railway passenger car bogies exported to Iran, and successfully summarized a set of welding operation steps, thus filling the gap of argon arc welding for the girth of railway passenger car bogies in China, and also providing valuable experience for the development and production of new high-speed rail in China in the future.
Third, carefully cultivate and create a "training miracle"
Cultivating new forces for the production of high-speed EMU is another great contribution of Li Wanjun to the high-speed rail manufacturing in China. In order to ensure the smooth production of EMUs with speeds of 250km/h and 350km/h, and the trial production of ultra-high-speed EMUs with speeds of 380km/h, Li Wanjun shoulders the heavy responsibility of training back-up skilled workers for enterprises. In less than two years from 2008 to 2009, while working, he compiled teaching materials and undertook training tasks, creating a "training miracle" in which more than 400 new workers all obtained the international welder qualification certificate six months in advance. His carefully written teaching materials, such as carbon dioxide gas shielded welding flat butt joint, one-sided welding and double-sided forming welding technology, are easy to understand and well received by employees.
Since 2010, Li Wanjun took the lead in setting up the company’s welder chief operator studio and served as the person in charge. Through the platform of the studio, he set up a senior welder class and a senior riveting class in Changke Co., Ltd., and adopted the training mode of "big" and "small" interspersed with "horizontal" and "vertical" for welders, organized more than 400 centralized trainings, trained more than 20,000 welders and obtained more than 4,000 international and domestic welder qualification certificates.
In order to give full play to the skill inheritance function of "Model Worker Innovation Studio", Li Wanjun led the studio members to undertake the welder skill exchange and inheritance activities in Jilin Province and Changchun City, including China FAW, and formed resource sharing, training high-skilled talents for 15 times, totaling more than 1,500 times. In August, 2012, under the organization of provincial and municipal trade unions, he also participated in the activities of high-skilled talents going to Xinjiang for technical assistance, and held a superb feast for more than 400 skilled workers in Altay, Brzin, Habahe, Jimunai and Fuyun, which made the spirit of model workers take root thousands of miles away. In 2012, he was awarded the "Li Wanjun National Skill Master Studio" by the Ministry of Personnel. In 2014, he was awarded the "Model Worker Innovation Studio" by the Jilin Provincial Federation of Trade Unions and the All-China Federation of Trade Unions respectively. He himself was awarded the excellent model worker with high skills by the Changchun Municipal Federation of Trade Unions for many times.
Among his apprentices, 20 were awarded the title of inspection-free employees and post experts, and 8 were awarded the title of the first batch of chief technicians in Jilin Province. Disciples He Yan, Wang Shangeng and Dong Zemin won the third place in the 2013 Changchun Welder Competition respectively, Sun Weipeng, Park Dongyue and Zhang Ye won the first, third and fourth place in the 2014 Changchun Welder Competition respectively, and Wang Shangeng and He Yan won the second and third place in the 2015 Jilin Welder Competition respectively and were awarded the May 1st Labor Medal of Jilin Province. In June 2018, Apprentices Wang Shangeng and He Yan won the first place in the aluminum alloy welding and exhibition competition of the International Jiake Cup Welder Competition respectively. On April 28th, 2015, Li Wanjun was gloriously elected as the national model worker, and read the proposal to the broad masses of workers in the Great Hall of the People on behalf of all the model workers, and was personally awarded by the Supreme Leader General Secretary.
Li Wanjun also took an active part in public welfare activities after work. In June 2013, he visited poor students in Yongxing Street, Jingyue Development Zone, Changchun City, and subsidized tuition in 1000 yuan. In March 2014, he visited orphans in Jilin Province orphanage and exchanged personal growth experiences with students. In May 2014, Li Wanjun was awarded the title of the first batch of "Jilin Good People" by the Jilin Provincial Party Committee, and was selected into the "China Good People List" in July of the same year.
He has grown from an ordinary welder to an expert in high-speed rail welding in China, and has successively won "Changchun Special Model Worker", "Jilin Special Model Worker", "Jilin Senior Expert", "the State Council Government Allowance", "National May 1st Medal", "National Technical Expert", "Chinese Skill Award", "National Model Worker", "National Excellent Communist party member" and "Touching China" in 2016.
