On September 15th, the website of the Ministry of Civil Affairs published the statistics of civil affairs in the second quarter of 2023. Data show that in the second quarter of this year (2023), there were 1.781 million couples of marriage registration and 676,000 couples of divorce registration nationwide.
Compared with the first quarter of this year, the number of marriage registrations in the second quarter of this year decreased by 366,000 pairs, and the number of divorce registrations increased by 35,000 pairs. Compared with the same period in the second quarter of last year, the two data increased by 156,000 pairs and 178,000 pairs respectively.
In recent years, the news that the number of marriages nationwide has reached a new low has aroused widespread concern.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Civil Affairs, China’s marriage data began to decline year by year in 2014, with 13.4693 million couples in 2013, falling below the 10 million couples mark in 2019 and 7.636 million couples in 2021, falling below the 8 million couples mark. In 2022, the number of marriage registrations nationwide was 6.833 million, a decrease of 803,000 couples or about 10.5% compared with the previous year.
